Shataranj

With the revolution, the pandemic and the port of Beirut’s explosion, Lebanon found itself in a context of increased economic crisis and political chaos. This period led to the relearning of patience through the appreciation of life’s raw pleasures.
Created in 2021, the chess set Shataranj channels the sumptuously simple and beautiful moments lived during those difficult times.
This paradox constitutes the piece’s conceptual starting point. It translates, for example, in the confrontation of the yellow and blue, the hot and cold, or the black and white, the shadow and light.
Handcrafted in Beirut by Lebanese artisans, Shataranj conveys a desire to return to the roots. Under its contemporary and abstract aesthetic, the chess game displays primitive geometric silhouettes and primary or neutral colors. The pawns’ design is based on a few archetypes in order to form a recognizable and coherent family.
